CONTEXT

CONTEXT

Across Latin America, journalists continue to be threatened, disappeared, and killed for doing their job — often with little to no accountability.

The deaths of Carlos Lajud, Alfredo Jiménez, and Irma Flaquer became symbols of that reality. Their stories sparked outrage, but outrage alone hadn’t been enough to drive change.

Working with the Inter American Press Association, the challenge was clear: move beyond awareness, and create something that could carry real institutional weight.

IDEA

IDEA

Turn memory into action.

We worked with the families of the journalists to extract DNA from personal belongings — embedding it into graphite to create a series of “Immortal Pencils.”

Objects that didn’t just honor their legacy, but extended it.

The pencils were then placed in the hands of decision-makers. Amplified by Jorge Ramos, the initiative called on governments to take a public stand on press freedom.

In a historic moment, the presidents of Panama and Dominican Republic used the pencils to sign the Chapultepec and Salta Declarations — formally committing to frameworks that protect journalists and freedom of expression.
