Immortal Pencils

Immortal Pencils

When journalists are silenced for seeking the truth, their spirit shouldn't vanish. Lápices Inmortales immortalized three fallen reporters by embedding their DNA into pencils—turning them into powerful press-freedom tools that Latin American heads of state used to sign binding declarations. Journalist Jorge Ramos helped amplify the message, transforming loss into lasting legacy.

CONTEXT

CONTEXT

Journalists Carlos Lajud (Colombia), Alfredo Jiménez (Mexico), and Irma Flaquer (Guatemala) were killed or disappeared while performing their duties. Their deaths sparked protests, but impunity remained entrenched. Partnering with the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), we aimed to create a symbolic act that would elevate awareness and drive real institutional change.

IDEA

IDEA

We invited the families of the deceased journalists to contribute personal items for DNA extraction. That DNA was infused into graphite, creating Immortal Pencils—memorial objects designed to honor and extend their voices. Renowned journalist Jorge Ramos lent his influence to amplify the effort, inviting both governments and citizens to recommit to protecting press freedom.

In a historic act, Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo and the Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader used these pencils to sign the Chapultepec and Salta Declarations, committing to legal frameworks safeguarding journalists and free expression
